Steering wheel lock buying guide
A steering wheel lock is one of the simplest ways to make your car a harder target. It fits over the steering wheel and stops it turning, so even if someone gets into the car they cannot steer it away. Just as useful, it is easy to see through the windscreen, and a visible lock can be enough to make a thief move on to the next car.
Which steering wheel lock should I choose?
All our locks fit over the wheel rim and come off in seconds when you want to drive. The main difference is how much of the wheel they cover and how they look.
- T-bar and hook locks are the classic choice. Our T-bar steering wheel lock is bright yellow (38 x 19 cm) so it stands out, and the car steering wheel lock is an iron hook design that fits most cars.
- Budget pick: the anti-theft steering wheel lock in black or red is our lowest-priced lock at £12.99.
- Seat-belt style: the heavy-duty seat belt style lock is made from steel and locks across the wheel.
- Full-cover locks: the three-point steering wheel and airbag lock locks both sides of the rim and covers the airbag, with padded contact areas to protect the wheel. Available in black, grey or wine red.
- Locks with extra deterrents: the aluminium lock with alarm has a blade-key cylinder and a built-in alarm, and the steel lock with keys is a heavy, highly visible option supplied with 2 keys.
Before you buy, check the product page for size and fitting details and compare them with your steering wheel.
Layer your security
No single device stops every theft, so most security advice suggests using more than one layer. If your car has keyless entry, a steering lock works well alongside:
- a Faraday key pouch, which blocks the signal from your key fob at home, to help against relay theft
- an OBD port lock, which covers the diagnostic socket so a thief cannot plug in a programming tool
- a clutch pedal lock, which clamps the clutch or brake pedal

Using a steering wheel lock day to day
Fit it every time you park, even for a few minutes. Keep the keys away from the car keys so they are not lost together. Never fit a lock while the engine is running or before the car is parked and stopped.
